Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions Presentation at European Society of Biomaterials Explores Expanding Role of PEEK Polymer Across AIMD (Active Implantable Medical Device) Sector

THORNTON-CLEVELEYS, UK (25 August, 2009) Invibio® Biomaterial Solutions, a leading provider of high-performance implantable biomaterials to the world’s surgical and medical device markets, will address the annual conference of the European Society of Biomaterials, September 7 – 11, in Lausanne, Switzerland. In its presentation (titled ‘PEEK Providing Solutions for Active Implantable Medical Devices’) Invibio reviews the latest research and how it is enabling new uses for its high performance PEEK-OPTIMA® biomaterial across the dynamic Active Implantable Medical Device (AIMD) sector.   Invibio introduced PEEK-OPTIMA polymer, the world’s first implantable grade polyetheretherketone (PEEK), in 1999; Invibio’s product portfolio also includes implantable MOTIS™ polymer and ENDOLIGN™ composite, and medical grade PEEK-CLASSIX™ polymer.

The AIMD sector encompasses the established and robust cardiac market as well as the neuromodulation field which is among the most rapidly growing areas in medicine today, propelled by clinical and technologic advances. As evidenced by the current and continuing uptake in usage across the AIMD sector, Invibio’s advanced PEEK-OPTIMA polymer is gaining ground by providing innovative alternatives to traditional materials in areas of critical importance to designers striving to realize the next generation of advancement.

The mechanical and physical properties of PEEK-OPTIMA are extremely well suited for AIMD applications. It is tough and abrasion resistant with high impact strength and excellent flexural and tensile properties. Additionally, it has a low coefficient of friction and resists attack by a wide range of organic and inorganic chemicals and solvents. Formulated to meet exacting in-vivo criteria, PEEK-OPTIMA is a proven biomaterial that provides medical device manufactures and patients with a variety of distinct advantages over other accepted implant materials such as ceramics, metals and other polymers, including:
  • Proven safety, biocompatibility and biostability;
  • Stable electrical insulation properties;
  • High mechanical toughness;
  • High thin film impact strength;
  • Compatible with a range of joining technologies;
  • Excellent telemetry and communications characteristics;
  • Design flexibility and micro injection moulding of minute intricate parts (miniaturisation);
  • Superior chemical resistance, oxidation resistance, and thermal dissipation behaviour; and,
  • Natural radiolucency and compatibility with radiograph and magnetic resonance imaging.

According to Invibio president Mike Callahan, the AIMD sector is one of a growing number of application areas that are taking advantage of PEEK-OPTIMA’s strength, biocompatibility, and durability characteristics.

“PEEK-OPTIMA polymer and compounds have been outperforming competitive implantable medical device materials in spinal applications for nearly a decade. This proven track record, coupled with the continually evolving body of recent clinical data and research confirming its application-specific suitability, has boosted this versatile advanced polymer to prominence in AIMD and across an increasingly diverse range of implantable medical device applications,” Mr. Callahan commented.
