The Biocompatible Standard in Spinal Applications

Implantable PEEK-OPTIMA® polymers and ENDOLIGN® composites are attractive alternatives to titanium, bone, or ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) for spinal applications.

PEEK-OPTIMA has a proven history of success in spinal applications and has been used in thousands of regulatory approved spinal devices since 1999. In fact, PEEK-OPTIMA is a standard in spine fusion and is used in the development of numerous motion preservation and dynamic stabilization applications. A substantial body of published clinical data supports its efficacy in cervical and lumbar fusion.

The extreme strength and fatigue resistance of ENDOLIGN composite makes it an excellent, non-metallic biomaterial for applications including fixation systems and pins.

Key benefits of Invibio® PEEK-OPTIMA and ENDOLIGN for Spinal Applications:
  • Controlled imaging properties allow healing site monitoring and implant placement verification
  • Bone-like modulus encourages load-sharing, which minimizes stress shielding and stimulates bone healing
  • Highly resistance to creep ensures implant stability
  • High compressive strength to meet load requirements
  • Excellent wear characteristics contribute to longer implant life and reduces likelihood of inflammatory problems
  • High fatigue resistance; able to withstand high range of motion cycles without failure

PEEK-OPTIMA and ENDOLIGN – A History of Spinal Solutions

Spinal Fusion Cage

One of the world’s leading spinal device companies selected implantable PEEK-OPTIMA polymer for their radiolucent spinal fusion cages due to its manufacturing versatility and high strength-to-weight ratio which allowed a large graft space and a unique design to stimulate bony fusion. Additionally, the modulus of elasticity of the implantable polymer is between that of cortical and cancellous bone, which promotes load-sharing and minimizes the problems associated with stress shielding. Tantalum markers are placed in the radiolucent PEEK-OPTIMA device to allow implant placement verification.

Cervical Plate

Invibio ENDOLIGN composite is used in an innovative cervical plate, used for the stabilization of the cervical spine, due to its exceptional mechanical properties such as high fatigue strength, which exceeds the values of titanium implants by up to 50-60%. Furthermore, the device, manufactured using Composite Flow Molding (CFM), provides a smooth hydrophobic surface to prevent soft tissue attachment and, being non-metallic, allows artifact-free imaging and MRI compatibility.
