Exceptional Non-metallic and Non-ceramic Options

PEEK-OPTIMA® and PEEK-CLASSIX® polymers are used by leading dental product manufacturers as alternatives to metallic and ceramic materials for a range of dental applications, including crowns, bridges, implants, healing caps, gingival formers and temporary abutments. Benefits for dental applications include:
  • High-compressive strength withstands load requirements
  • Proven hard- and soft-tissue biocompatibility
  • Natural color for excellent aesthetics
  • Dentist chair-side modifications possible
  • Metal-free solution eliminates ion exchange in the mouth
  • Very low thermal conductivity and electrically non-conductive
  • Flex modulus similar to cortical bone may prevent stress shielding, osteolysis and implant loosening

PEEK-based Solutions for Long- or Short-term Dental Applications

Crowns, Bridges, Implants and Attachments

A company specializing in the development of non-metallic and non-ceramic biomaterial solutions is using PEEK-OPTIMA polymer as the platform for its new generation of non-metallic and non-ceramic complex dental biomaterials, for use in oral applications including crowns, bridges, implants and attachments. The combination of biocompatibility, mechanical performance, and physical properties — including elasticity and a modulus close to that of bone — that PEEK-OPTIMA provides, allows it to significantly outperform metals and ceramics. Additionally, it offers excellent aesthetic and processing benefits over other dental biomaterials.

Temporary Abutment

A leading dental device manufacturer desired to offer a non-metallic temporary abutment. PEEK-CLASSIX polymer, in white, was selected due to its strength, biocompatibility and ability to be injection molded. As an added benefit, the white color provides improved aesthetics over metals that allow the abutments to closely match the color of natural teeth. The polymeric biomaterial also enables chair-side adaptability. This ability, not possible with titanium or ceramics, ensures the abutment is flush with the patients’ gingiva, prohibiting the soft tissue from receding under the abutment. Such control is critical to the healing process and to ensure the final abutment and crown assembly will fit properly.
